"How does that affect our migration?", asked our director.
"We haven't really thought about the migration", responded a developer.
So I asked the question, "When you drive, which car are you looking at?"
One team member responded with, "the car in front."
Another replied, "all around."
I answer with, "my right eye looks at the car in front of me, my left eye watches 4 cars ahead, and I use my peripheral vision to see either side, too." I went on to draw an analogy with planning.
We have to be able to look at the big picture and the detail, the short-term and the long-term, the leaders and the followers. That's how we grow.
In the end, all worked out. I'm glad to work with a great dev team.

Great analogy, Peter... you have to see not only the car on the right, but the car about to hit the car on the left about to hit the car on the right.
I look all around cause I'm paranoid and if 3 cars in front of me has an idiot driver its going to affect all of us behind, so I'm always on alert for that. I always watch the side cars too cause several times I've nearly been side-swiped (the worst was when dad and I were going to the airport to pick up mom!) and I really don't want to be side-swiped.
If you don't pay attention to all the details during planning, you'll miss something vital when you try to execute it later.
